10 Forklift Safety Tips!

Here are some safety tips to remember when operating a forklift:

1: Only qualified operators can use a forklift

Operating a forklift should only be done by a person who has received the

proper training and has a forklift operators license or certification.

2: Perform a walk-around check before starting

Operators must do a routine check of their forklift before starting their shift. Often you will be required to fill out a check sheet and sign and date it for your records. Look for any hazards or defects to the machine while checking it.

3: Use safety equipment as provided on the forklift

If your forklift is equipped with seat belts, you must wear them if you are driving the machine. Stay in the operator’s seat and keep your body within the frame of the vehicle at all times. This will keep you safe in case the forklift tips over.

4: Always travel with the forks positioned as low as possible

When driving the forklift, be sure to keep your forks close to the ground for stability and maximum protection for others around you.

5: Remember the stability triangle!

Place your loads back by the mast, low to the ground and tilt the mast towards you for the best stability. Never place a load half on the forks away from the forklift.

6: The horn is your friend!

Always use your horn when driving your forklift around corners, entering a room or when backing up. This will ensure others will hear and then see you coming.

7: Forklifts are NOT cars - speed kills!

A forklift is not a car! Forklifts steer from the rear wheels, and turn differently. Also, a forklift can weigh as much as 15 cars with the counterweight. A forklift is a machine which can kill a person or damage a building if used improperly. Never speed with a forklift, especially when carrying a load.

8: Watch your load

Avoid driving your forklift forward if the load is too tall and obstructing your view. Instead, drive the forklift in reverse. Be sure to inspect your load to ensure it is balanced and stable before moving.

You may need to strap or package the load before transport. Never attempt to lift a load that is too heavy for the forklift to handle. Be extra careful with dangerous loads such as chemicals or acids.

9: Be alert - be careful

When operating your forklift it is important to be alert at all times for dangers and others around you. Avoid hazards on the floor such as oils or water and possible debris that can cause your machine

to become uncontrollable or unstable. It is your responsibility to look out for pedestrians around

your machine.

10: Park your forklift properly

When you are finished using the forklift, be sure to lower the forks completely to the floor

and tilt the mast forward slightly. This will ensure no one will trip on the forks if they

walk by the machine. As well, you may be required to take the keys to prevent

non-operators from using the forklift.
